The Modern Theme Classic Reprint Jose Ortega Y Gasset 9781330799369 Books

The Modern Theme elaborates Ortega y Gasset's perspectivist philosophy that seems similiar to process philosophy. The author identifies the biological and cultural influences on humans. He discusses how these keep people in tension toward progress or regress. Ortega y Gasset demonstrates a high view of humans and even sees God as somewhat dependent on humans to gain a full point of view of reality. In this book, Ortega y Gasset identifies that Western man has lost his anchor of traditional values and guidance and faces a severe disorientation in modernity. I think we see the roots of what has developed in post-modernism of everyone living according to individual values and drifting with the delusion of orientation. Living with great liberty has causes people lacking concrete orienting values to cling again to slavery to one thing or another, "Slavery is their highest ambition," he writes. It would be interesting to read some later works and see how his view of Western man's progress developed. On one hand, he has a high view of the enlightenment and evolution of Western man, but on the other hand he sees a potential spiral into disarray and dissipation.

The reading is quite dry and entails what I would consider rambling.
